The Turtle 1 is presented to the Dutch audience at the car fare Autosalon 2013. The first edition of the Autosalon is held in the conference center Ahoy in Rotterdam. Specialy for this occasion Dr. Wacu from our partner SMIDO came to join the promotion team of the Turtle 1. For eight days Dr. Wacu was our guest.

The Autosalon was the perfect place to promote the Turtle 1. A lot of people recognized Dr. Wacu from the Autoweek magazine. We thank the organisation for their dedication and help to make the promotion of the Turtle 1 a success.

Dr. Wacu at the HAN workshop

The aim of the visit from Dr. Wacu is to make a plan for the future. SMIDO wants to build a Turtle 2. To see how we can help to continue the project, we paid a visit to the most famous Automotive university in the Netherlands, the HAN. Lejo Buning gave us a guided tour in the workshops of the HAN University of Applied Sciences.

On the last day of Dr. Wacu’s visit, the German television program VOX came to do a interview about the Turtle 1. For this occasion we did a off terrain test-drive in the Rotterdam harbor. The item will be broadcasted in january 2014.

Of course we had some time left to do a touristic tour to the Dutch highlights!

The final evening we gathered the whole group who traveled to Ghana to eat in the restaurant Happy Safari in The Hague. A proper Ghanian meal before leaving the country!

The car is ready for export! The final testdrive is to the capital Accra. 250 KM, 12 roadblocks and many dustroads ahead. After nine weeks we develloped an African car from scratch; the SMATI TURTLE 1. Today the Ashanti king Otumfuo Osei Tutu II comes to our workshop in Suame Magazine to bless our journey. For everybody a special day. This is the first time a king visits Suame Magazine. A huge recognition to the people of the area and a huge media hype for the SMATI TURTLE 1.

Het idee dat alles beter is in Europa is onomstotelijk waar. Daar valt niet over te discussiëren met de Ghanezen. Tekenend voor deze overtuiging is dit reclamebord. Honden worden over het algemeen beschouwd als schurfterige ziekte verspreiders. Een zwerfhond die het waagt om in de buurt te komen kan een steniging verwachten. De Europese hond is iets heel anders. Daar betalen mensen grif geld voor neer om met het beest rond te wandelen alsof het een Gucci handtas is.

Het bouwen van de auto is een nieuwe fase ingegaan.
Waar de eerste maand vooral in het teken stond van kant en klare auto onderdelen aan elkaar verbinden, is nu de eigenlijke vormgeving begonnen. Een nieuw team is gevormd en die verrichten fantastisch werk.
Alles wat ik uit verfrommeld karton of brandhout in elkaar knutsel maken zij na in ijzer, rubber en hardhout. Het is geweldig om kleine frutsels echt te zien worden.

De lassers hebben mijn, uit afvalhout gebouwd frame vertaald in een cabine. Zo schetsmatig als ik werk modelleren zij het ijzer. Elke ontwerpfout zie ik in het ijzer stollen. Onvermoeibaar corrigeren ze mijn geklooi. Alles gaat op het oog en niets in deze auto is nog haaks of recht te noemen.

De Straighters, of ook wel paneelmeppers genoemd, kloppen het plaatwerk in elke gewenste bolling. Het frame verdwijnt langzaam achter de verroeste balken. Met kartonnen dozen heb ik alle vormen uitgewerkt. De kartonnen modellen maken de paneelmeppers op het oog na. Zij kloppen het ijzer tot het plaatje klopt.
